Multilingual Glossary of Technical and Popular Medical Terms A European Union project, this glossary includes medical terms in nine Eurpoean languages.

The Virtual Medical Center A site crammed with resources including "61,600 Teaching Files, 129,800 Medical Cases, 1,160 Courses and textbooks, 1,580 Tutorials, 4,100 Databases, and 10,700 movies..." Also includes topics that do not seem to be related to health, such as links to sites having to do with time.

PubMed

The place to start (and, likely, finish) medical/health literature searches.
This is the replacement for and expansion of services for Internet Grateful Med.
It includes over 11 million citations in MEDLINE and a number of other databases at the (U.S.)National Library of Medicine. It also includes full-text articles and an unrestricted archive of articles from selected journals.

Excite (Internet portal) Health page Frequently updated, provides links to stories about medical and health issues, mostly for the layman. Provides links to many health/medicine sites, including searches for information on diseases, diagnoses, medicines, etc.

Globalhealth 2000 A very comprehensive, multi-lingual site that provides health news (said to be updated every half-hour) from all over the world, a section with multispecialty articles for physicians, consumers and patients, an interactive forum including chat rooms, message boards, instant messenger and video conferencing and links to many other health and medical sites. The site requires a one-time easy-to- complete registration (which includes the option of obtaining a Web-based e-mail account).

Health ONE The "Multi-lingual, home-grown health portal from Singapore..." A very useful and comprehensive site based at the National University of Singapore (the WHO Collaborating Center for Health Informatics). Site has a wealth of health and medical-related information, including clinical practise guidelines avalable on the Internet, support groups, links to medical image databases, fascinating interactive (virtual) patient care programmes (free registration required) and special sections for health/medical professionals and the public/patients. This is a site worth visiting again and again as the source of or leads to many health and medical resources!

Health On The Net Foundation A very comprehensive site providing links to a large number of other health and medical services and WWW sites. Provides access to MEDLINE, a large archive, including health and medical graphic images.

MedWeb Plus "a free service designed to help users sift through the ever growing amounts of data of/on/about or an any way regarding the health sciences...catalogs both on-line and print information sources...an information space centered around a catalog of biomedical resources on the World Wide Web..."

WebMD Portal for a large quantity of medical and health related topics, searches for details on diseases and conditons, drugs and herbs, etc. Users can register to participate in discussion groups on scores of health/medicine related topics.

The WWW Virtual Library Public Health Page Provides links to a multitude of Public Health-related sites either by selected topics or geographic location.

Yahoo! (Internet portal) Health page Frequently updated, provides links to stories about medical and health issues, mostly for the layman. Provides links to many health/medicine sites, including searches for information on diseases, diagnoses, medicines, etc.

The American Public Health Association (APHA) Links to mostly USA-based public health programmes and organizations.

The Canadian Public Health Association Good links, mostly related to Canadian Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and universities working in Canada or internationally.

Centers For Disease Control And Prevention Home Page of this USA government public health organization (CDC). Site features hundreds, perhaps thusands of links to inforamtion, data, research, etc. for almost any imaginable public health topic both in the USA and internationally. A link permits users to subscribe by e-mail to the electronic versions of a variety of CDC publications and updates.

Family Health International (FHI) Descriptions of projects and research activities in the areas of AIDS/HIV/STD, Family Planning, Reproductive Health, and Women's Studies.

The Global Health Council (formerly National Council for International Health/NCIH). Links to many other organizations, most of which are involved in international health and development.

Healthlink Worldwide (formerly ARHTAG) (UK-based NGO) "works to improve the health of poor and vulnerable communities by strengthening the provision, use and impact of information." Bibliographic database, citations, summaries of 16,000+ articles.

HealthNet (SatelLife) Offers free subscriptions to electronic conferences (AFRO-NETS, PROCAARE, PROCOR, E-Drug), various e-mail-based documents/journals (Health News, Child Health Dialogue, Health Action, AIDS Action, CBR News, WHO Library Digest for Africa) and GetWeb which provides access to any document on the WWW by e-mail (for use by people who do not have Web browsing access or very slow Internet connections).

Health Systems Trust Health Line (South Africa). Very useful links to a wide variety of South African and international organizations, also links to journals and online databases; an easy-to-navigate and attractive site. Access from Namibia is relatively fast.

International Development Research Centre (IDRC) Canadian organization provides results of research activities, links to resources, database search, and archives. Check out the interesting Scoreboard that tracks population growth and shrinkage of productive land by the second on this page.

Medical Matrix A peer review organization site; provides excellent links.

Pharma-Lexicon A searchable database of more than 22,000 acronyms and abbreviations in the fields of pharmacy, agrochemicals, veterinary medicine, chemicals, public health, toxicology, biochemistry, general medicine, nursing, physiotherapy.

Prescription Drug Database A searchable database of drugs, medicines, and herbs, detailed information including description, interactions, dosages, etc. provided by WebMD. U.S.A. - oriented.

The British Medical Journal

The Bulletin of the World Health Organization Table of contents, abstracts (HTML) and full-text (PDF) of all articles, news items, guidelines for contributers, subscription information for the postal edition.

The Journal of the American Medical Association Can subscribe free to monthly table of contents sent by e-mail, some articles are abstracted, some are presented in full text.

The Lancet

The New England Journal of Medicine. Can subscribe free to weekly table of contents sent by e-mail.

Health Services Journal Described as "the UK's leading health policy and management magazine." Site provides abstracts of articles in the current issue of the publication. Also offers a searchable database of health management job vacancies (mostly in the UK). Simple, one time registration is reqired to use this site.

CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) Mostly USA-related, but includes international information and articles. Articles can be viewed/read online with browser, but Adobe Acrobat Reader - see link at bottom of this page is required for reading/printing "official" (.pdf) version.

The South African Medical Journal Home page of the South African Medical Association also has many links to other local (RSA) and international sites.

MALSAT-The Environmental Information Systems for Malaria (and Meningitis) This project is investigating the "eco-epidemiology of vector-borne diseases using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and applications of remote sensing techniques.." The concept and site is fascinating. (downloadable) maps and software. Also has good links to GIS and Malaria Web pages. Site is located at the Liverpool School of Health and Tropical Medicine (UK).

Malaria Foundation International This (UK) group's mission is "to facilitate the development and implementation of solutions to the health, economic and social problems caused by malaria. Good general and scientific information and links to malaria-related pages. The best place to start for delving into Malaria information/sites.

The Malaria Network A WHO - World Bank collaborative project to establish "a global network for senior health workers with specific responsibility for implementation of malaria control." Provides access to anybody for information and access to a variety of malaria issues. Use of the "Intranet" is restricted to registered users.

Royal Perth Hospital (Australia) Malaria Page Detailed and comprehensive coverage of various malaria diagnostic, prophylactic, treatment and research issues. Good links to additional malaria and tropical disease sites.
