Administering the Atomic Energy and Radiation Protection Act

THE ATOMIC ENERGY & RADIATION PROTECTION ACT, ACT NO 5 OF 2005
- Establishes the Atomic Energy Board and its Secretariat to establish regulatory standards and advise on the appropriateness of nuclear energy appliications with due regard to international recommendations & practices
- Establishes the National Radiation Protection Authority to regulate and monitor all activities involving radiation sources, radioactive and nuclear material
DIRECTORATE: ATOMIC ENERGY & RADIATION PROTECTION
- The mandate of the Directorate: Atomic Energy and Radiation Protection consist of two Division namely Nuclear Applications and National Radiation Protection Authority
DIVISION: Nuclear Applications
The madate of the Division is to:
- Support the Atomic Energy in execution of its duties.
- Development of regulations pertaining to the safe use of nuclear technology
- Advising on the approriateness of nuclear energy for socio - economic development
- Promting nuclear technology through project formulation and project management in the areas of health, uranium mining, agriculture, water, energy production, education, etc.
- Facilitating Namibia's ratification of treaties and Conventions within the sphere of nuclear energy
- Establishment of capacity and capbaility to respons to potential nuclear or radiological incidents/accidents
- Establish cooperative arragements at national, regional and international level in areas of nuclear energy.
DIVISION: National Radiation Protection Authority
- Empowered by provisions of the Act, the mandate of the Division is to ensure the health ans safety of workers, public an protection of the environment agaisst harmful effects associated with radiation

- Regulating Activities involving Radiation Sources, Radioactive and Nuclear Material
Through the
- Development and implementation of the regulatory regime
- Reviewing Radiation Management Plans
- Conducting inspections to ensure compliance with regulatory standards
- Assessing the extend and impact of radiation exposure in Namibia
- Equipping operatiors with technical capability for compliance
- Management of radioactive waste
- Ensuring the security of radiatin sources

All activities involving radisation source, radioactive and nuclear material requie the following:
- Written notification to the Directorate of your activity or intention to engage in activities involving radiation related technology
- Submission of an application form
- Development of a comprehensive Radiation Management Plan.
